Ostrów Tumski: Wrocław's cathedral island, where the city began

Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, is where Wrocław began. It sits on an island in the Oder, just north of the Old Town, and for centuries it was the religious heart of the city. Today it is one of the calmest places in Wrocław, with Gothic churches, old brick and some of the few gas lamps still lit by hand.
What is there to see on Ostrów Tumski?
The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is the main church of the island and one of the oldest parts of the city's religious life. Its Gothic interior is worth a slow look, and the tower gives views over the river if you are willing to climb.

Next to it is the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St Bartholomew, a short walk away. It is smaller, quieter and easy to combine with the cathedral in the same visit.
The island's streets are narrow and lined with older buildings, which makes them good for a slow walk rather than a checklist. Look for the gas lamps: they are part of the island's character, and they are lit in the evening.
How long should you spend there?
An hour is enough to see the two main churches and walk the streets. If you want a slower evening, plan it for the golden hour before sunset: you get the lamps being lit, the light on the brick, and fewer visitors. Combine it with the Old Town, which is a short walk across the bridges, and a good place for dinner afterwards.
What else is nearby?
The island is also home to the dwarf figures, so a dwarf hunt fits easily here. For the rest of the Old Town, see One day in Wrocław, and for ideas that cost nothing, Free things to do in Wrocław.
Practical tips
Check the opening times of the churches before you go, because they can close during services or for events. The island is quiet at night, so wear proper shoes and a light jacket in autumn, and plan your return to the Old Town before it gets dark.
